You got the offer, so what’s next? Here’s how to prepare before your start date
As a college recruiter in Progressive’s Talent Acquisition Group, I know there can be a lot to consider when preparing for that first professional internship or full-time role after college. And, for many, there are months between the time you accept an offer and your start date.
Don’t let this time go to waste. Here are three things you can work on to feel ready for your first day.
Being punctual and managing your time efficiently are important aspects of business professionalism. Get yourself on a routine prior to your start date so you’re used to getting up and starting work at the same time each day. Consider using a digital or physical planner to set goals and track deadlines for your schoolwork.
Arriving on time for meetings and getting ahead of deadlines demonstrates respect for others’ time and shows your commitment to your responsibilities. As you prepare for your career, this is the perfect time to work on time-management and organizational skillsets that will set your career up for success.
Given that there can be a gap of anywhere from two to six months between your acceptance of a job or internship offer and your start date, make sure those job-specific skills get some use before you start your new role. If you’re unsure what skills to practice, reference the preferred skills and knowledge portion of the job description you applied to. This lists the skills that you’ll use most in the role.
Finding time to use them will help you feel prepared to hit the ground running.
From participating in team discussions to presenting your project work to business partners, you’ll rely on strong communication and presentation skills throughout your career. Strengthening those skills now will help you feel more comfortable in front of an audience. Consider taking a public speaking class beforehand to learn how to communicate effectively.
